HACHURE: a new project by Pierre Charpin for ABET LAMINATI

From colour fills to new geometric archetypes
Abet Laminati presents HACHURE, the new Design Collection by Pierre Charpin
The Design Collection of Abet Laminati is enriched by the contribution of Pierre Charpin. The collection Hachure—Italian for tratteggio—will be unveiled on April 6 at the Opening Event at 44Spazio, Corso di Porta Nuova 44, during Milan Design Week. This collection represents an intense study of surface decoration, where lines transform into dense, colourful patterns that explore new geometric archetypes.
Pierre Charpin is an undisputed master and a key reference for many professionals who see in his work a fundamental lesson, including the ability to transcend the boundaries between artistic disciplines.
The Hachure collection will be showcased through a monumental artistic installation hosted at the Sowden Gallery, an iconic space for art and design in Milan. Throughout the year, the venue displays work by its owner, George Sowden, one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. He was a member of the historic Memphis group, an Italian design and architecture collective founded by Ettore Sottsass. Abet Laminati has supported the group since its inception, developing new applications and shaping the history of contemporary design.
Abet Laminati, Pierre Charpin, and George Sowden: together for something unique and special.
In the collection created for Abet Laminati, Pierre Charpin presents a remarkable synthesis of two worlds: the line contrasted by colour fills. The intersecting and overlapping lines—distinguished as bold, medium, and light, terminology borrowed from typography—create a precise design, a loosely woven pattern that evolves into denser compositions. So much so that, from a distance, the whole appears as a uniform and continuous surface. The colour aspect also shifts from a monochromatic treatment to an interplay of intersecting lines filled with other colours. The result is striking for the dynamism of a design that is only seemingly simple.
Each pattern in the collection, realised in digital print, is available in various colourways, each featuring lines of different thicknesses and directions. This layering creates textures that appear to shift and transform, enriching the overall visual effect.
